Velocity X vs shadcn/ui
Same philosophy — components installed as source you own, not a package you import. Different trade-offs. Here is the honest version, including when shadcn/ui is the better pick.
| shadcn/ui | Velocity X | |
|---|---|---|
| Model | Copy-in source you own (CLI) | Public free source to copy; paid CLI delivery in preview |

| Frameworks | React (community ports exist) | Astro + React, stated per component |
| Primitives | Built on Radix UI | Dependency-light; no primitive layer required |

Pick shadcn/ui when
- You're React/Next-only and want the ecosystem default everyone on the team already knows.
- Budget is zero — it's free and MIT, full stop.
- You want Radix's primitive layer underneath everything.
Pick Velocity X when
- You ship Astro sites and want components that aren't React ports with a hydration tax.
- You want an upgrade path — versioned components you can hot-swap, pin or roll back without re-applying edits.
- You need finished application surfaces and marketing sections, not just primitives to assemble.
Common questions
- Is Velocity X an alternative to shadcn/ui?
- Both are designed around source you own. shadcn/ui has a public CLI; Velocity X’s CLI is not on npm yet. Velocity X covers Astro as well as React, and keeps component version history for the future upgrade workflow; shadcn/ui is free, React-first and has a far larger community.
- Can I use Velocity X and shadcn/ui together?
- Yes. The MIT-licensed free source can be copied into your project alongside shadcn/ui. Paid Velocity X source delivery is in preview while the CLI is prepared.
- Is any of Velocity X free?
- 40 components are MIT licensed and available as public source to copy (https://github.com/aidenwood/velocity-x-free-components#copy-into-an-existing-project). Paid source delivery is not self-service while the Velocity CLI is in preview.
